8-Gold Smith heads Dolphin haul at Corsham gala

Open Meet, Springfield Centre, Corsham, 12-13 January 2008

- 95 PBs reported

The Corsham Open Meet swimming gala in mid-January witnessed some fantastic individual victories for Bath Dolphin swimmers - placings in all of the 26 category events - but a more significant group achievement were the 95 personal bests that every member of the squad racked up between them.

The competition, staged over two days, involved 15 clubs from Wiltshire and Bath and North east Somerset, who gathered at Corsham’s compact, four-lane pool in the Springfield Centre.

Leading the Dolphin’s haul of medals was 10-year-old Tom Smith who won all of the eight events he entered: 200m backstroke (Bk), breast-stroke (Br), free-style (FS) and individual medley (IM), and 50m Bk, Br, butterfly (BF) and FS. Rebecca Cornish (14) won five golds: 200m Bk, FS and IM, and 100m BF and FS, and one silver: 100m Bk.

Other Dolphin swimmers striking gold were: the likely-looking Jasper Lye (9), who took three as well as two silvers; Ryan Gay (14), two wins along with pairs of silver and bronze; brother Scott Gay (11), two victories and three bronzes. Lina White (14) triumphed in the testing 200m BF.

Record-breakers
It was perhaps not surprising that this record-breaking weekend also saw two long-standing Bath Dolphin club records smashed. Tom Smith powered to 2.58.86 in the 200 IM (11yo) and Jasper Lye achieved 3.19.34 in the 200m Fs (9yo).

Rising star Ella McNulty (9) picked up two silvers and two bronzes; Chloe O’Sullivan (14) a silver and a bronze; as did Katie Stenner (16); Alisa White (10) won silver in the 200m Bk. Bronze medal winners included promising Charlotte Holmes (9), Jonathan Coates (9), Joseph Jacobs (10), Jamie Li (10), Rebecca Coates (12) and Rachel Li (13).

Reflecting the resurgent ambition throughout Dolphin, there were strong performances across the whole of the 30-strong squad. Besides the medal winners, the other Bath swimmers all achieved personal bests including Esmee Charley, David and Verity Cook, Emer Heatley, Hannah Higson, Geraldine Hill, Liam O’Sullivan, Adelaide Peach, Holly Perkins, Millie Phillips, Emily Skailes, Maeve Smith, and Lily and Maisie Woods.

At the Corsham meeting, many of the Dolphin swimmers also took the opportunity to boost their “BAGCat” (British Age Group Categories) points. Swimmers’ totals gained and their positions in the whole competition were as follows: 9yo - Jasper Lye 273 points (1);  Jonathan Coates 138 (4); Ella Mcnulty 320 (3); Charlotte Holmes 254 (4);  Millie Phillips 140 (6); and 10yo - Adelaide Peach 470 (4=); Alisa White 470 (4=); Esmee Charley 409 (6); Maisie Woods 261 (12); Holly Perkins 248 (13); Emily Skailes 217 (16).
Swimmers of the Month

Bath Dolphin Junior Squad Swimmer of the month awards.

This month there is a change to the usual awards.

The girl swimmer of the month goes to Millie Phillips. Millie has been a member of the Junior Squad for a number of years now and in recent months has shown great improvement in her technique and stamina, culminating in an excellent swim at the recent Junior League. As with all previous SOTMnth winners Millie always works hard in every training session and shows 100% concentration throughout. A joy to coach and a very valued member of the squad. We look forward to her forthcoming swims with interest.

The boy swimmer of the month is…….. Maddie Brown. Maddie has improved beyond all recognition both in technical ability and her maturity in the pool. Maddie works hard and conscientiously through all the training sessions and her times have tumbled culminating in an excellent performance at the Junior League where she was part of the triumphant U9 freestyle relay team. Again the common thread through these awards is a swimmer who has trained hard, showed dedication and has been rewarded with personal bests and excellent gala results. Well done Maddie

I am disappointed that I was not able to award the “boy swimmer of the month” to a boy! There were a number of swimmers who came close but they either did not attend enough sessions or if they did then they did not concentrate or work as hard as the girls. I hope next month a boy decides to win this award and stops the girls doing this again!

Well done girls you are training hard and showing the boys how to do it!!

See you all at the next training session.
