Tom Relishes First National Outing

Ponds Forge Centre Sheffield, Thursday 29th July

Tom Smith returned from the British Gas National Age Group Championships with a new PB and a range of event merchandising but more significantly a huge sense of achievement and a fillip to his inspiration having experienced his first taste of competing at the highest level of domestic competition. Racing in the 13 year boys 100m freestyle Tom lowered his personal best by  0.23 seconds and in the process ranked 12th in the list of 15 swimmers in the event.

This ranking meant that Tom was listed as second reserve for the evenings final and whilst it always looked to be a huge long shot that he would take part in the final, Tom elected to report to the call room for the evening race in the hope of getting a second swim.

For some time it did appear that he would be in luck as only minutes before the last call, the first reserve had not reported and only nine swimmers were in place. Sadly for Tom though it was not to be as the remaining entrant showed up with literally seconds to spare.

As Tom now heads for a well earned break before heading to Bryanston, head coach Phil Brake’s attentions now turn to Luke Ladbrooke who will be competing in the 50m & 100m backstroke events at the Senior ASA National Championships at the Sunderland Aquatic Centre. Full credit is due to Phil for the many hours he (together with the other coaches and teaching staff) dedicates to the swimmers - as demonstrated by his reluctance to return home on Thursday  despite there being only a very slim chance of Tom appearing in the final.
